Building a Sense of Belonging for Children

The number of children with anxiety are rising according to NHS website1, but why?

According to the children’s commissioner for England, 44% of under 21’s have not lived their parents during childhood2. Even though children lived with their parents, it is not necessary that they lived in the best environment for them. This suggests that the number of individuals who may have spent their childhood in a broken family could be remarkably high.

Because we are social animals, most humans are seeking their sense of belonging; this is a way to protect us from predators in ancient times. These instincts are still ingrained in our blood. If we can’t find where we belong, we become profoundly anxious and find it hard to function mentally properly.

Why is the number rising?

About 100 years ago, due to widespread poverty, communities were actively supporting each other. During that era, these communities functioned like large families, with people relying on one another. Children were protected by the community, even if they lived in broken families. I believe such communities still exist in villages today. However, this form of community support began to diminish over time.

How can they survive in this era?

We need to create a sense of belonging for children who are struggling to find it. Providing them with a space where they can escape from family, school, or friends can be a way to help them and prevent mental breakdowns. The importance of finding a sense of belonging is crucial for everyone, and by offering support in this way, we can contribute to the well-being of these children. Create a community where children can find belonging; this initiative has the potential to positively impact the futures of those neglected by their parents. Sadly, reports indicate that 1 in 10 individuals aged 11-17 in the UK has experienced neglect3.

Why are finding belongings so important?

Individuals who experience feelings of support from close family and friends tend to feel accepted for who they are. This creates a sense of belonging, which is closely tied to their self-esteem and the validation of acceptance. These elements are crucial keys to our overall well-being. Conversely, those who lack support are more likely to experience mental health issues, low self-esteem, social isolation, these could lead to engaging in criminal activities, self-harm or running another responsibility, and difficulties in forming and maintaining healthy relationships. Moreover, we can reduce the likelihood of adults who are unable to fit into society and struggling to find decent jobs. If we can support and assist children in finding a sense of belonging as they grow up, it will lead to a brighter future and guide them on the right path. Therefore, it is massively important to create a sense of belonging for them.
